Our perch traps are precision made marvels, designed to safely catch any small passerine that lands on the perch. They can be used on the ground or, with the mounting bracket, screwed into any upright piece of wood (such as a tree!).
Featuring a double bow net with one bow slightly smaller than the other, the two halves cross over when tripped, to take up the slack in the net. As a result the bird is held firmly in the soft netting and will not damage itself by struggling. With bird safety paramount, we have designed the perch trap so that any larger birds (from Starling upwards) can release themselves from the flexible bows. This rules out the possibility of half-trapped birds becoming injured.
Supplied with a small bait tray which fits the perch, these traps can be used with sunflower seeds, peanuts etc to entice birds to land on the perch. They are also supplied with a mealworm clip (a hair grip) which holds up to three live mealworms. The trap can be mounted upside-down when not in use and left in situ with bait still provided in the tray so that birds become accustomed to using it.
While baiting is often preferred, positioning the trap where a bird is likely to land on it without bait is often just as effective. For example one placed next to a conventional bird feeder or bird table will almost certainly work, as will one placed near a small pond.
The trap is supplied with two pegs for mounting it on the ground. Baited with mealworms, this is effective for species such as robins, pipits and wheatears.
The trap also fits onto a screw mounting (supplied), allowing it to be screwed into any tree, branch, post or other timber structure. If there is no suitable bit of wood near the trapping location, we often use a spare furling stick pushed into the ground.
Perch traps are designed to catch small passerines up to the size of a greenfinch. Birds such as starlings, blackbirds, collared doves or jackdaws or even larger species can easily escape from the flexible bows without harm.
Perch traps are effective in strong winds when mist netting cannot be carried out. However, like mist nets, they should not be used in rainy conditions.
Built to last, our perch traps feature an all-welded steel frame with hard drawn stainless steel wire for the bows
