High Fliers for Birds
Differing from the bat version only in its dark green guy ropes, the High Flier for birds can be used with your existing mist nets to take on new ringing challenges and increase both your species count and annual totals.
While a triple net system could be used for bird ringing, we recommend a single or double net system for most scenarios. Alternatively a single, high net deployed on High Fliers can be partnered with a lower net, set on conventional poles a metre or so to one side of the High Fliers. This gives maximum flexibility, especially if larger species or high numbers are anticipated. High Fliers are effective for any standard length of mist net, although the limited diagonal play of shorter nets make the larger sizes (12m & 18m) easier to raise and lower from one pole at a time. With the shorter sizes it is necessary to lower both ends together or, if only one operator is present, in two or three stages from alternate ends. Note that it is not always necessary to hoist the net(s) to the full height of the poles. They can be flown at any height from 450mm above the ground to the full 8 metres.

Here a single 18 metre net is deployed at full height in a ride through young woodland. With scrub and young trees to the left and taller mature trees uphill to the right (just out of the picture), many birds were flying diagonally up or down, usually above three metres high. Use of High Fliers in this situation has accounted for large numbers of birds of a very wide range of species. Highlights here have included good numbers of Lesser Redpoll, Treecreeper and Redwing together with larger species such as Woodpeckers, Jay and Mistle Thrush. So few birds have been caught lower down that the initial use of two nets (one high and one low) has been abandoned in favour of the single high net.
In this suburban garden, large numbers of House Sparrow roost and breed in the climbers on the side of the house. Here it was found that the birds flew over a low net or under a high net but using a double High Flier system with nets from 450mm to 6m above ground results in regular good catches.
In the same garden small numbers of Brambling are seen in most winters. Using conventional nets these birds were seldom caught but with a single net High Flier the capture rate increased dramatically.
There are many other examples of good catches made with High Fliers. This includes Yellowhammers caught over scrub, Swallows over hedgerows and Redwings and Fieldfares flying in to the tops of fruit trees before dropping to the ground to feed.
Customer Review:
I would also like to express my satisfaction with your High Flyer system I purchased last year. It has been a great success catching many warblers, finches and best of all about 700 Redwing! The quality of the system is excellent and is very simple to erect. I can recommend other ringers to purchase the High Flyer system if they wish to increase their catch.
A fantastic addition to any bird ringers catching armoury!
