Large Potter Trap
The big Daddy of our Potter trap range, this one measures 12" x 12" x 24". It has a top-hinged door and can be used either as standard (where the bird triggers the door by stepping on the treadle) or in remote control mode, allowing the ringer to take a selective catch.
Like our other single Potters, this one comes with a small extraction door at the rear to simplify removal of smaller birds, up to Blackbird or Water Rail size. The trap is supplied flat-packed with instructions for self-assembly and this makes it cost effective for overseas delivery. Being foldable, it is particularly suited to ringers/banders working in remote locations where carrying fully assembled traps over long distances is out of the question.
The large Potter is suitable for birds in the size range from Wood Pigeon up to Rook, Crow and Herring Gull.
An advantage of this larger trap is that wary species such as European Jays or Jackdaws are more likely to enter the more spacious trap than smaller versions. Although they are small enough to fit in smaller Potter traps, their natural wariness makes them reluctant to enter. The larger trap seems to overcome this problem.
The Large Potter will also catch smaller species down to Starling or Song Thrush size and has been known to catch multiple Redwings when they are feeding together on apples.
Like our other Potters, this one is made of 16g galvanised weldmesh with a green powder coating.
Potter traps are very simple to use with only two or three moving parts. The doors close under gravity, using no springs. This makes them extremely safe to use as the light doors can't harm any half-caught birds.
